There is an ancient Greek folktale still very popular in Greece today that there is a mermaid that constantly plows the wide seas and asks every captain whether Alexander the Great is still alive. If the captain dare answer “No, he died long time ago,” the mermaid immediately raises a storm and sinks the ship.

Although the Greeks were great philosophers and dramatists, they didn’t have a system for counting. Hence the absence of any Greek mathematical texts (except Pythagoras whose work was all ‘mental’. The only way the Greeks could represent numbers was by adding an apostrophe sort of mark to the letters of the alphabet, starting with alpha (‘), going to omega (‘) and then starting again with two marks ( ‘ ‘ ). Made addition & subtraction difficult! (The Romans had the same problem as well!)

Athena (goddess of wisdom) was born from the forehead of Zeus, after he complained of a migraine.

The Ancient Greeks created the first special effects in a theatre – the noise of thunder was generated by a hole that was bored underneath the seats of an amphitheatre all the way from top to bottom. On cue, a stone ball was rolled from the very top of the theatre, and down the tube…producing a rumbling like thunder. Murders were never shown on stage, but a bloody and gory actor’s body would be pushed out on a small stage trolley so that the audience could see it. The Greeks were also some of the first to use a special ‘flying’ effect for gods – they hoisted actors up on a crane and dangled them in front of the stage.
