The Ford Mustang

The history of the Ford Mustang began with its production in 1964 at a plant in
Dearborn, Michigan  and was first shown to the public at New York’s World Exhibition
in 1964. It was an instant hit and  was the beginning of what was to be the most
popular car ever in American history. It was a car of its
day that arrived with perfect timing. It was sporty and quick and a four seater.
It was appealing to youngsters, its customers included every age and it was
equally popular to men and women. It sold half a million in its first year.

The Mustang was the beginning of a new class of sports car that would become
known as “pony cars.” Because it was introduced several months before the regular
beginning of the production year, early Mustangs are often called 1964 and ½ models.
The original Mustang was available as a convertible and as a coupe

The chassis, suspension and drivetrain were developed from the Ford Falcon and
Fairlane. Ford was driven to use corresponding components from the Falcon
so they would be able to save money. These parts included the rear suspension and
double wishbone coil spring.

Ford carefully crafted its ads to appeal to the psychological level of car
purchasing. For instance, the Mustang did offer a large number of options.
And these options certainly attracted a wide variety of customers. Ford’s
advertising cleverly targeted this with the appealing line, “The car designed
to be designed by you.”

The advertising paid off as the car easily won the love of the American of
the 60’s. By 1966, Ford had sold a million Mustangs. In 1966 they were able to
advertise, “What do you do when you’ve sold a million? Build a second million.”

The Mustang was definitely sporty in appearance. It was built low to the ground
with full wheel cutouts and a forward thrusting hood. It was fast cheap and popular
and got the whole “Muscle Car” era going.

Manufactured and engineered to be a muscle car, this particular car model stands
away from the rest by it unique design and power. The best part is that due to
this model’s reputation the company keeps improving and redesigning it to deliver
a high quality driving machine every single time.
Mustang fan and racer, Carol Shelby, modified 100 of the 2+2 models into
GT 350 models, in the process re-equipping them to render them more suitable
for racing. The suspension, wheel and brakes were all modified, and the cars
were to become the basis of many future models that are even now are much sought
after.

The newest Mustang has reverted to some of the original features, and it is a
miracle that the car has survived so long. Nobody involved in 1962 development
team would have believed that the great Ford Mustang would still be around 45 years
later.
